Impact of Stratospheric Geoengineering on Sea Surface Temperature in the Northern Gulf of Guinea

چکیده

Among techniques proposed to limit global warming, there is Stratospheric Aerosol Geoengineering (SAG) which aiming increase Earth-atmosphere albedo by injecting sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere in order reduce solar radiation that reaches earth. This study aims assess potential impact of SAG on Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Northern Gulf Guinea and its causes using GLENS (Geoengineering Large Ensemble) simulations performed under a high anthropogenic emission scenario (RCP8.5). Here, we focus two dynamically different regions: Sassandra Upwelling Côte d’Ivoire (SUC, located east Cape Palmas) Takoradi Ghana (TUG, Three Points). Results show SUC region, climate change, an SST (referred as current climate) all year long (by 1.52 °C average) mainly due net heat flux (lead decrease longwave radiation) also weak vertical mixing (caused strong stratification dominates shear). Under SAG, decreases seasonal cycle with maximum December (−0.4 °C) reduction diminution advection (due temperature gradient velocity). In TUG warming little more intense than region changes are driven stratification. The cooling similar but contrary this not only explained remote forcing wind at western equatorial Atlantic.
